. >> reporter: former navy s.e.a.l. sniper chris kyle was such a good shot he once hit a target more than a mile away, but police say it was a bullet fired at point blank range that ended the life of the husband and father of two. >> i'm a better husband and father than i was a killer. >> reporter: the 38-year-old died at a place he should have felt comfortable, this gun range southwest of dallas. and detectives say he died at the hands of a young man he was trying to counsel. >> the suspect's mother, she may have reached out to mr. kyle to try and help her son, and we kind of have an idea that maybe that's why they were at the range for some type of therapy. >> reporter: officers arrested this 25-year-old former marine, eddie ray routh, after a police chase saturday night. they say routh turned the gun on kyle and a friend, 35-year-old chad littlefield, murdering them both. his family told them he was having trouble readjusting to life at home after years of war. that's something kyle spoke about frequently. >> you don't have an identity. you have to learn a whole new way to act. >> reporter: k
have read the book called "american sniper," written by former navy s.e.a.l. chris kyle, often referred to as america's best and deadliest sniper during his war-time deployments as a marine. chris kyle was killed this weekend in texas after he and a friend took a troubled fellow marine veteran for an outing at a shooting range. we get the story tonight from nbc's jim miklaszewski. >> reporter: as a navy s.e.a.l. sniper in iraq, chris kyle was so feared, the enemy called him the devil of vermonty and put an $80,000 on his head. >> tragically, it was back home where kyle and a friend were shot and killed. the suspect is a 25-year-old marine reservist, eddie ray roth. without warning, routh allegedly shot the two victims with a semiautomatic handgun. he's in custody facing two charges of capital murder. sheriff tommy bryant told reporters, routh turned on his guards overnight. >> he became aggressive, and they believed he was about to assault them so they tased him and put him in restraint. >> reporter: routh served two tours in iraq. once back home, his family reportedly feared he was suf

enjoining us. a real tragedy. in texas annishac war veteran facing murder charges gunning down a former navy seal who was claimed to be the most lethal sniper in u.s. military history. police say that this man, eddie ray routh shot and killed chris kyle and his friend at a shooting range in texas. routh is under suicide watch in jail, charged with two counts of murder. our joe johns is in stevenville, joe, some kind of disturbance involving the suspect overnight. tell us what happened there. >> reporter: it was a disturbance, michael. the short version is that jailers went into routh's cell, apparently to remove eating utensils, and the sheriff says he became aggressive with those jailers, he had to be daysed. they say he was put in a restraint chair, kept in that restraint chair overnight. however, we are told the jailers have been ordered to release him, if he agrees to work with them. he has been placed on suicide watch. he's in a cell by himself. and the sheriff says he would like to see some type of a psychiatric evaluation of the defendant. >> what's next in the case against him? does
was a former navy lieutenant in the naval reserves. and now we are told that u.s. navy bases in california and nevada are on, quote, maintaining a heightened security posture, a heightened state of alert as they too are on the lookout for this man. and they do have some reason to know that he has approached the u.s. military in the last few days. a couple of days ago, they learned -- they discovered that he had stayed at a navy motel facility in san diego, and on wednesday he approached two navy sailors at his old unit when he was in the reserves, had a conversation with them, they did not realize they had been talking to dorner until they saw all the news reports. so a lot of concern now, in fact, a day ago, the point loma naval base shut down briefly while they thought he might be there. so now overnight the admiral in charge of the southwest region of the united states for the u.s. navy has ordered this heightened security posture. they're not talking exactly about what they're doing. i think we can well understand that they're going to check everybody's passes, everybody's access, as t
